Lavell’s Lake is in the northernmost part of Dinton Pastures Country Park and set in about 46 acres of a mixture of managed wetland habitats, including Phragmites reed beds, sedges, grass areas, coppiced scrub and hedgerows.
Lavell's Lake was designated a conservation area in 1984 and officially became a nature reserve on 7 July 1987, when the Friends of Lavells Lake (FOLL) became a registered charity. In 2018 FOLL became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation – Lavell’s Wetland Trust – in order to take its mission forward.
On the fourth Sunday of each month LWT holds work parties to manage the diverse habitats to be found here. Various conservation tasks are carried out which differ depending on the time of year. These include coppicing and removing willow, maintaining tern rafts on the lakes, removing invasive Himalayan Balsam, managing reed beds and fencing.
Volunteers meet at 10am in the Sandford Lane car park (opposite the Dinton Activity Centre entrance) and work for three hours with a break for tea, coffee and a chat. The work carries on whatever the weather, and old clothing and sturdy boots or wellies are recommended. LWT provides work gloves and all necessary tools. No car parking fees apply for those taking part.
