Igniting Writing is a creative writing club for 11-18 year-olds to develop their storytelling and writing skills in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Writing can be seen as a solitary activity, so it’s a great opportunity for teens to come together and write as a group, share their imaginative story ideas with others and build friendships with other young aspiring writers.

Sessions are free to attend and focus on a different writing topic each week, from building settings and creating characters to exploring sci-fi and fantasy worlds, so there’s something for everyone. Face-to-face sessions are held at Wokingham Library every Saturday (excluding the second Saturday of each month and school holidays).

Session for Year 6-8 pupils: 9:45am to 11:15am
Session for Year 9-13 pupils: 11:45am to 1:15pm

Igniting Writing also holds ‘Write with an Author’ online sessions on the second Saturday of each month, 10:30am to 12:00pm. Sessions feature a Q&A with published authors, useful writing tips and fun writing activities.

If you want to see what Igniting Writing members have said about the group, have a look at the testimonials below:

Ruth Lucas, pupil at St Crispins School: “The Igniting Writing sessions have helped inspire me and build my confidence. After speaking to a friend I made at the group, I’ve started publishing some of my writing online on Wattpad.”

James Balmer, pupil at St Crispins School: “I like that the group brings together lots of creative people like me. The sessions encourage motivation and spawn a lot of creative ideas that everyone can develop in their writing.”

Nat Lory, pupil at St Bartholomew’s School: “Igniting Writing is definitely more relaxed than school – I love to let loose and write without restrictions and the group members are really open and accepting to any newcomers. It’s great for helping you to turn ideas into something more coherent.”

Harry Dean, pupil at Reading School: “Each week is something different, which has helped push me out of my comfort zone by writing about things I’d never have considered otherwise. I enjoy the guest speaker sessions too, because you get to hear some different writing styles and voices.”

Places are limited, so attendance for the face-to-face or ‘Write with an Author’ sessions must be booked in advance. To register, please email libraries@wokingham.gov.uk.
