The Arts Society Henley aims to make the world of arts and crafts accessible to everyone and, by connecting members with leading experts, foster an enduring journey of learning and a profound appreciation for human creativity. The society achieves this through hosting monthly lectures and organising day trips and short breaks.

Talks are held on the third Thursday of the month, starting at 2.15pm in the café at Henley Rugby Club.

This month's talk: Exploring Handel’s Messiah with Sandy Burnett

For many Christians and music lovers, the Messiah plays a central part in every Christmas celebration; a success since its Dublin premiere in 1742.

In his festive lecture, Sandy examines Handel's revolutionary impact on Georgian music making, reflects on his brilliant librettist Charles Jennens, muses on performances over the years, and celebrates Messiah's many unforgettable moments, not least the Hallelujah Chorus – just how did it become so famous?
