Twyford-based charity Understanding Dementia is running a family-friendly online quiz on St George’s Day. This is a great way to help them raise money and have a fun night celebrating the patron saint of England!
There is no charge to take part, but the charity will be asking for donations on the night. Please register interest via the Facebook event page using the link above.
The quiz is part of the charity’s campaign to raise much-needed funds after a year of not being able to hold any fundraising events. They have been running a series of online training courses for dementia family carers throughout Autumn and Winter, but there is still so much need: people with dementia and their carers are particularly struggling with lockdown and the feelings of isolation that it can bring.
Therefore the charity is offering local people a variety of ways in which they can offer support, including the quiz night.
Anyone who can’t make the quiz can make a donation any time via the charity’s website – see link above. Understanding Dementia currently has a waiting list for their dementia family carers training course, and they are concerned that they won’t be able to reach everyone who needs their support if they can’t raise vital funds.
There are other ways in which people can support them – such as setting up a Facebook Fundraiser. These can be for birthdays which encourage people to donate to Understanding Dementia instead of buying presents. Or a Fundraiser where family and friends can sponsor you to run, walk, or cycle a certain number of miles in a month. You could hold your own online family and friends quiz with a fee to take part which goes to Understanding Dementia; or even sell unwanted items online and send them the proceeds. There are many innovative ways in which people have been fundraising via methods other than face-to-face.
Understanding Dementia would greatly appreciate any support that people can offer at this time. They would also like to thank the sponsors of the event that have come forward so far, including Benedict Charles Financial Planning, RG10 Magazine and Thames Valley Travel – and also for their ongoing support.

Understanding Dementia was established in 2018 with the aim of bridging the gap between awareness of dementia, and a real understanding of how it affects the person. With this understanding, its effects can be lessened, therefore reducing stress and increasing wellbeing for both the person with the dementia and those caring for them.
The charity runs free training courses for dementia family carers, and is also setting up paid for courses for health and care professionals.
