Wokingham Choral Society will be holding their Autumn Concert titled 'English Masters' on 16 November at 7.30pm at All Saints Church, Wokingham. The centrepiece of the concert is Britten’s cantata St Nicolas which tells the story of the legendary bishop of Myra St Nicholas (Santa Claus) The choir will be conducted by their musical director George de Voil and accompanied by pianist and organist |Ben Giddens together with the Chameleon Orchestra. This dramatic work will be further enhanced with the inclusion of the choir of pupils from Windsor Castle School and a the well-known tenor Nicholas Madden singing the part of St Nicolas. The work is unusual in that the audience are invited to participate in the singing of two congregational hymns.
The program will also include two of Henry Purcell’s anthems, O Sing Unto the Lord and Jehova, quam multi sunt hostes mei. These works showcase Purcell’s brilliance in combining intricate harmonies with expressive text settings, offering a glimpse into the Baroque era's rich musical tradition.
