Wargrave Theatre presents A Bunch of Amateurs

A Bunch of Amateurs by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman

Fading Hollywood ‘star’ Jefferson Steele, keen to boost his flagging career, arrives in England to play King Lear in Stratford - except his agent has not told him that it is not ‘upon Avon’ but a sleepy Suffolk village and, instead of Kenneth Branagh and Dame Judi Dench, the cast are a bunch of amateurs trying to save their ‘theatre’ from the developers.
Jefferson’s monstrous ego and vanity are tested to the limit by the enthusiastic am-dram thespians. What male actor hasn’t wanted to play King Lear? How many female actors have longed to play Cordelia, or even her obnoxious sisters Goneril and Regan?
So we have an arrogant, egotistical American, a sulking leading man who thought he should have been ‘Lear’ for whom it would have been the pinnacle of his career, actors who have ‘day jobs’, and a desperate director trying to placate everyone and save the theatre. Sound familiar? A terrific comedy deliciously stuffed with Shakespeare – a laugh-a-minute! Don’t miss it.

Tickets are available from the middle of February - book online via the link above or call the Ticketsource number.
