9 to 5 is being staged by Woodley Light Operatic Society at the Kenton Theatre in Henley from 13-16 June 2018. The production is directed by Lee Anderson and choreographed by David Parsonson, with Patrick Naylor as musical director.
Take yourself back to a world where men held all the cards; a workplace where as a woman, your dress sense and sex appeal would take your career further than your education; a time where everything was far from equal. This is the world of 9 to 5 – The Musical.
Into this world steps the unsuspecting Judy, looking for work after her cheating husband – the aptly named Dick – left her to fend for herself. She meets Violet who supports her, despite her obvious lack of office skills, and Doralee, whom everybody in the office assumes is having an affair with their lecherous boss Franklin D Hart.
Doralee is horrified when she finds out about the rumours, whilst Violet discovers that she has been passed-over for promotion for a boy that she trained! A mutual hatred for the boss pulls these three together to become an unlikely trio, setting the stage for a most satisfying revenge.
One hilarious act leads to another, and before long Violet is successfully running the business in the boss’s absence. What has happened to Hart? And how will the office fare when its out of town boss comes to visit? Book tickets for 9-5 The Musical to find out.
Based on the 1980 film of the same name, 9 to 5 is a modern musical that premiered in Los Angeles in 2008 with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, and features a book by Patricia Resnick.
The show opens with that famous Dolly Parton number ‘9 to 5’ and includes many foot stamping, toe tapping and heart rending songs including ‘Backwoods Barbie’, ‘One of the Boys’ and ‘Let Love Grow’ as well as imaginative use of video and a few words from Dolly herself.
